Dissolve your dark side by shining you light upon it

Your “dark side” doesn’t have to be a scary place. And if it is, learning how to throw a little light on it will bring calm and confidence like you’ve not known before.

“So I find myself in my fifty-seventh year, circling the house of my personality with a six cell flashlight, exploring the shadows around the bushes, in the corners, and behind the steps. There are a few bogeymen hidden there, and I don’t plan to invite them out to play. But they are less scary with the light on them than when they are half-hidden. And then, behind an occasional bush, or halfway between the house and garage, my light picks up the hidden figure of wisdom, of energy, of life. The search is worthwhile. I wonder why I didn’t begin it earlier.”
~John Cowan in The Common Table

I gotta tell ya, I really related to that little passage.

I spent most of my life not having a clue as to what my inner landscape looked like, or even knowing there was one. Although I think, in the way-back of my mind, I was planning an excursion through that dark side of the mysterious forest on some tomorrow or another.

I guess I kept stalling on it for fear of what I might discover: Lions and tigers and bears – oh-my!

Then, while fumbling through my 45th year I stumbled on to an interesting saying, “The point of power is in the present moment.” That led me down a pathway which opened a door on  a book: You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay, which led to an intensive on Louise’ s philosophy, which turned out to be an expertly guided tour of my internal universe. Oh-my!

There were lions and tigers and bears, and-more. Through the process though, I have managed to tame the worst of them. They now reside happily in an internal petting zoo that is quite an interesting place to visit on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
